In briefThe Food Standards Agency issued a Food Alert for Action on 10 October 2026 telling businesses to withdraw and recall eggs from one Ukrainian food business after the UK Health Security Agency found Salmonella Enteritidis in samples. The strain does not match the outbreak strains under investigation but has been linked to 36 cases in England in 2026. UK-produced eggs and eggs sold in major supermarkets are not affected, the agency said.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a Food Alert for Action on 10 October 2026. It is addressed to businesses including caterers, manufacturers and wholesalers, as well as to consumers. It tells them to withdraw and recall eggs from one Ukrainian food business after testing found Salmonella Enteritidis. The FSA said anyone who has bought the affected eggs should not eat them and should dispose of them at home, as they may be unsafe.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) found the bacteria in egg samples from the Ukrainian supplier and carried out whole genome sequencing. The strain did not match the outbreak strains currently under investigation. According to the FSA, it was however linked to 36 cases of Salmonella infection reported in England in 2026.

The affected eggs

The FSA said most of the eggs are used in the catering supply chain, though some may be on sale in small shops. They are not sold in large retailers such as supermarkets. Reports by FarmingUK and STV News, citing the FSA and Food Standards Scotland, say the eggs come from Yasensvit Ltd in Kyiv and carry the code 3UA1012066 stamped on the shell. They also say the recall covers all pack sizes and best-before dates. Both outlets report that the eggs may have been repacked in the UK and sold under other business names. Kai Times could not open the alert itself (reference FSA-FAFA-03-2026), so it could not verify the name of the supplier, the egg code or the scope of the recall with a primary source.

Jacquelyn McCormick, Head of Incidents at the FSA, said the agency had taken urgent action. “It is important to say however that eggs produced in the UK are not affected,” she said. She added that eggs bought in major supermarkets are produced in the UK.

Hannah Charles, Lead Epidemiologist at UKHSA, said the agency had “confirmed the detection of S. Enteritidis (t5.8998) in eggs imported from Ukraine” and passed the finding to the FSA straight away. She said most Salmonella infections cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fever and usually clear up without treatment. The infection can occasionally cause more serious illness, including sepsis, particularly in young children, older adults, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

Wider outbreak investigation

The egg sampling was part of an ongoing investigation into a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that the FSA said is thought to be linked to imported eggs. In an update on 3 September 2026, UKHSA said it was investigating three clusters, designated t5.9411, t5.9765 and t0.24068. As of 1 September it counted 305 confirmed cases and one death in the t5.9411 cluster, 182 cases and no deaths in the t0.24068 cluster, and 41 cases and one death in the t5.9765 cluster, all in England. UKHSA said at the time that the risk to the general public remained low.

UKHSA’s weekly statistical release with data to 7 September put the t5.9411 cluster at 322 cases. Of the 171 cases with information available, 42 had been admitted to hospital. FarmingUK reported on 10 October that the outbreaks involve 650 cases and two deaths. Kai Times could not confirm that figure from a more recent UKHSA publication.

The FSA said its advice on eggs not covered by the alert has not changed. Eggs that are thoroughly cooked and handled hygienically should not present a food safety risk. Infants, young children, pregnant people and older adults should eat raw or lightly cooked eggs only if they carry the British Lion mark or are produced under the Laid in Britain scheme.

What happens next

The FSA said it is working with local authorities to make sure the alert is acted on quickly. It is also reviewing wider measures relating to the source of the current outbreak and working with international partners. It is not yet known how many eggs from the Ukrainian supplier reached the UK market or how many shops sold them. Kai Times could not find a public response from the Ukrainian company.
