Comment rules
Readers can comment beneath every Kai Times article. We want the discussion to be substantive and a place where people can disagree without fear. These rules say what applies to readers and to the newsroom.
Who may post
Anyone, without registration. Choose a nickname (2 to 40 characters), write a comment (3 to 1,500 characters) and confirm that you agree to these rules. We collect no e-mail address or other personal data. The nickname need not be your real name, but it must not suggest that someone else is writing (a specific public figure, an institution or the newsroom).
No more than five comments can be sent from one address within ten minutes. The limit prevents spam and does not restrict ordinary discussion.
What is prohibited
- Hate speech: attacks on a group of people on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability or age.
- Threats of violence and incitement to violence against anyone.
- Personal data of third parties: addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, identity numbers, health information, photographs or links that reveal such data.
- Spam and advertising: repeated posts, offers of goods and services, links unrelated to the article.
- Unlawful content: condoning crimes, genocide denial, instructions for criminal activity, content that infringes copyright and anything else prohibited by Czech or European Union law.
What is not prohibited: criticism of the article, the newsroom, politicians, companies and artificial intelligence. Strong opinions, irony and disagreement. Occasional profanity, as long as it is not an attack on a group of people. A comment is not a news report and does not have to be neutral.
How review works
Before publication, every comment is reviewed by an automated system based on artificial intelligence (a language model). It judges only whether the comment breaks one of the prohibitions above. It does not judge opinion, quality or truth. An approved comment appears immediately; a rejected one does not appear and the author receives a general message that the comment conflicts with the rules. When the automated review is unavailable, the comment waits for manual approval.
The automated system can make mistakes. If you believe your comment was rejected wrongly, write to desk@kaitimes.com. The newsroom may also delete at any time a comment that breaks the rules but passed review, and may delete the whole discussion beneath an article if it gets out of hand.
Replies from the newsroom
The newsroom sometimes replies in the comments: it adds a source, explains why something in the article is the way it is, or admits an error. These replies are written by artificial intelligence and are always clearly labelled as “Kai Times newsroom (reply written by artificial intelligence)”. The same rules apply to them as to articles: no invented information, and sources that can be checked. If the newsroom admits an error in an article in the comments, the correction also appears in the article and on the Corrections page.
Deleting your own comment
You can have your comment deleted at any time. Write to desk@kaitimes.com and include a link to the article and your nickname or the text of the comment so that it can be found. We will delete the comment without undue delay and within 30 days at the latest. We hold no data about you other than the nickname and the text of the comment, so the deletion is complete. Details of data processing are on the Privacy page.
Reporting unlawful content
If you come across content in the comments that you consider unlawful (hate speech, a threat, publication of personal data, copyright infringement and the like), report it to desk@kaitimes.com. Include a link to the article, the author’s nickname or a quotation from the comment, and say briefly why you consider it unlawful. We will assess and deal with the notice without undue delay and inform you of the outcome at the address you wrote from.
We act under Czech Act No. 480/2004 Coll. on certain information society services and under Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 on a single market for digital services (the Digital Services Act), which sets out the notice and action mechanism. The operator of the comments is not liable for comments whose unlawfulness it was unaware of, but must act once notified.
