In briefEurostat confirmed on 16 October 2026 that annual inflation in the euro area rose to 3.8% in September from 3.2% in August. Energy prices were 18.9% higher than a year earlier and accounted for 1.71 percentage points of the rate. Inflation rose in 23 of the 27 EU member states.

Annual inflation in the euro area rose to 3.8% in September 2026 from 3.2% in August, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, said on 16 October 2026. The figure is the same as the flash estimate the office published on 2 October. A year earlier, the euro area rate was 2.2%.

Annual inflation across the whole European Union was also 3.8% in September, up from 3.2% in August and 2.6% in September 2025. Consumer prices in the euro area rose by 0.6% from August to September.

Energy drives the increase

Eurostat said energy made the largest contribution to the euro area annual rate, adding 1.71 percentage points. Services added 1.52 points, non-energy industrial goods 0.29 points and food, alcohol and tobacco 0.25 points.

Energy prices were 18.9% higher than a year earlier, up from 14.3% in August. In September 2025 the annual rate for energy was -0.4%. The flash estimate had put energy inflation for September 2026 at 18.8%.

Services inflation rose to 3.2% from 3.0%. Prices of food, alcohol and tobacco increased by 1.3%, after 1.1% in August, while non-energy industrial goods inflation eased to 1.1% from 1.2%. The rate excluding energy, food, alcohol and tobacco was 2.5%, up from 2.4%. Unprocessed food prices rose by 4.0% year on year, compared with 2.7% in August.

The release shows the euro area rate for the six months from April. It was 3.0% in April and 3.2% in May, dipped to 2.8% in June, and then rose to 2.9% in July, 3.2% in August and 3.8% in September.

Differences between member states

Compared with August, annual inflation rose in 23 member states, held steady in three and fell in one. The lowest rates were in Sweden (1.0%), Hungary and Denmark (both 2.1%). The highest were in Romania (6.5%), Lithuania (6.1%) and Bulgaria (5.6%). Bulgaria has been part of the euro area since 1 January 2026.

Among the largest euro area economies, inflation rose to 3.3% from 2.9% in Germany, to 3.4% from 2.6% in France, to 4.2% from 3.2% in Italy and to 5.0% from 4.6% in Spain. Eurostat’s table shows that Slovakia was the only member state where the rate fell, to 3.0% from 3.1%. Outside the euro area, the rate rose to 2.2% from 1.5% in Czechia and to 4.0% from 3.5% in Poland.

Central bank and next data

According to a briefing by the House of Commons Library, the research service of the UK Parliament, the European Central Bank (ECB) raised its main interest rates by 0.25 of a percentage point at its meeting on 10 September 2026. The deposit rate went up from 2.25% to 2.5%. The briefing says the ECB expects inflationary pressure from the conflict in the Middle East to keep inflation above its 2% target for an extended period. The bank had already raised rates by the same amount in June 2026. Kai Times could not check these details against the ECB’s own press release: the page opened, but its text could not be read.

The ECB’s next scheduled policy meeting ends on 29 October. The sources consulted do not show whether the ECB has commented on the final September figures. Eurostat plans to publish its flash estimate of euro area inflation for October on 4 November 2026.
